ROBBIE CAPTAINS REDS IN ANFIELD FAREWELL

Lee Brown 13 May 2007
Kop legend Robbie Fowler will captain Liverpool against Charlton today in what will be his last game at what’s sure to be an emotionally charged Anfield.

Fowler will leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, but Rafa Benitez has given him the chance to sign off from his adoring fans wearing the captain’s armband and hopefully by scoring a goal.

Of course this might not be Fowler’s last game because the Reds still have the Champions League Final to come, and Rafa has named a strong side as they warm up for that.

Premiership #38 : LIVERPOOL VS CHARLTON ATHLETIC

LIVERPOOL VS CHARLTON ATHLETIC
Sunday 13 May 2007 15:00

Before the matter of the Champions League final in Athens Liverpool end their domestic season at Anfield against Charlton Athletic.

Alan Pardew’s side desperately need the victory to try and stay in the Premiership while the Liverpool fans will be in party mood as they cheer the Reds on to Athens.

It has been a turbulent season for Charlton and they have had three managers. Iain Dowie’s reign was short lived, as was Les Reed and Pardew came in to try and rescue the Addicks.

Back in December Liverpool beat Reed’s Charlton 3-0 courtesy of a penalty from Xabi Alonso and brilliant goals from Craig Bellamy and Steven Gerrard.

Brazilian Leiva is Liverpool’s first signing

May 12 2007 by Ian Doyle ,Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOOL have announced their first major signing of the summer with the arrival of Brazilian youngster Lucas Leiva.

The Anfield club held off a late bid from Manchester United to capture the 20-year-old midfielder from Brazilian side Gremio.

Lucas, who was also courted by a number of top Spanish and Italian clubs, will join Liverpool in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £5million.

“We have an agreement with Gremio and it is almost done,” said Anfield manager Rafael Benitez.

“He is a midfielder and won the golden boot (for best player) in Brazil last season.

“He is an under-20 international and will be going to the U20 World Cup with Brazil, and is a fantastic player for the present and the future.

“Lucas is a central midfielder. He can be a holding midfielder but he likes to go box to box. He scores goals and is a complete player.

“He will be ready to join the first-team squad from next season. He’s a very good signing for us and likes to be an attacking midfielder.”

Lucas is presently captain of the Brazil U20 team playing the 2007 South American Youth Championship, and has previously been called up to the full Brazil squad.

The youngster will be the second South American to join Liverpool this summer, with Argentine left winger Sebastian Leto also due to arrive at Anfield.
